What is the Stem Cell?

Or What is the Prime Care Plus


A stem cell is a special type of cell in the body that has two unique properties:


1. Self-renewal → They can divide and make copies of themselves for long periods of time.


2. Potency (differentiation ability) → They can transform into different types of specialized cells (like nerve cells, muscle cells, or blood cells).


This makes them very different from regular body cells, which usually can only divide a limited number of times and cannot change into other types of cells.

Types of Stem Cells

Stem cells are classified mainly by their origin and their potential:


1. By Potency (how many cell types they can become):


Totipotent:

Can form all cell types in the body and extraembryonic tissues (like placenta).


Example: The first few cells formed after fertilization (zygote).


Pluripotent:

Can form any cell type in the body, but not extraembryonic tissues.


Example: Embryonic stem cells (ESCs).

Multipotent:

Can form several related cell types.


Example: Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) in bone marrow (can make all blood cells).


Unipotent:

Can make only one type of cell, but still have self-renewal ability.


Example: Muscle stem cells (satellite cells).

2. By Origin:


Embryonic Stem Cells (ESCs):

Derived from early-stage embryos, highly pluripotent.


Adult (Somatic) Stem Cells:

Found in various tissues (bone marrow, skin, gut, etc.). Usually multipotent, used for repair and maintenance.


Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (iPSCs):

Regular adult cells reprogrammed in the lab to act like pluripotent stem cells. They behave similar to embryonic stem cells but avoid ethical issues.


Perinatal Stem Cells:

Found in umbilical cord blood, placenta, and amniotic fluid. They have unique therapeutic potential.
